WCMA’s Curator of Public Programs & Interpretation, Nina Pelaez, sends news of numerous events involving Grad Art alumni!
On Nov 11 at 12 pm EST, Worshipping at the Altar of Certainty co-curators Mallory Cohen, Nidhi Gandhi, and Elyse Mack (all MA ’20) will be in conversation with artist Kameelah Janan Rasheed. Their show was curated through the Contemporary Curatorial Workshop taught for Grad Art by alum Lisa Dorin, Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs and Curator of Contemporary Art at WCMA. [Sinclair Spratley (MA ’20) was also a co-curator on this exhibition.]
On Nov 15 at 12 pm EST, Repro Japan: Technologies of Popular Visual Culture co-curator Maggie Wei Wu (MA ’19) will be in conversation with fellow co-curators Christopher Bolton, Williams College Professor of Comparative and Japanese Literature, and Eron Rausch, artist and critic.
We also hosted a program this summer (now available on YouTube) featuring Elissa Watters (MA ’18), curator of the recent exhibition Art, Sport, and Propaganda: 1972 Munich Olympics. The exhibition also has a publication available online.
Christine Oaklander (MA ’90) shares that she’ll be speaking in the symposium “American Landscapes: Nature Beauty History,” organized by The Phillips Collection and The David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland, College Park. The event, taking place Thu, Oct 28 at 6pm EST, is hybrid; advance registration is required for both limited in-person spots and for a Zoom link.
Ann Shafer (MA ’90) sends an update on her new podcast, Platemark: “We’ve concluded Platemark series one, which focused on the museum sector and all the challenges it faces. We’ve moved on to Platemark series two in which we present a history of Western printmaking. For this series I’m joined by art historian and printmaker Tru Ludwig for conversations about the visual culture that grew out of the history of prints and its social context. We’re just getting rolling and are in the middle of Albrecht Dürer. In future episodes we will discuss materials and techniques as well as landmarks of print history, including works by Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Francisco de Goya, Honoré Daumier, Mary Cassatt, Käthe Kollwitz, Elizabeth Catlett, Edward Hopper, and on up into contemporary printmaking. Images of the prints covered will be available in each episode’s show notes. Plus, I have generated transcripts of each episode for those with learning differences.
Head over to platemarkpodcast.com for links to episodes, images, and transcripts. You can also find Platemark on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Podcasts, Pocket Casts, and IHeartRadio Please follow us, leave a comment, ask a question, tell your friends about us. Thank you and happy listening.”
